MARTINSVILLE, Ind., March 29 (UPI) -- Prosecutors say they want a 15-year-old accused of shooting a classmate Friday at a middle school outside Indianapolis to be tried as an adult.
Prosecutors in court documents cited the boy's criminal history and the aggravated nature of the shooting as grounds to try Michael Phelps, 15, as an adult.
Phelps was formally charged Monday as a juvenile, the paper reported, for allegedly shooting eighth-grade student Chance Jackson, also 15, about 7 a.m. Friday at Martinsville West Middle School.
Jackson, who the paper reported has had two surgeries, was in serious condition Tuesday at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.
Five felony charges against Phelps were read at a hearing Monday in Morgan County Superior Court, including attempted murder.
A judge Monday ordered Phelps remain at a juvenile detention center pending further hearings.
His mother, the paper said, has requested that he receive "spiritual counseling."
Trial has been tentatively scheduled for April 18.
