MONTGOMERY, Ala., March 27 (UPI) -- A collision in central Alabama involving three cars left four Indiana teenagers and an Alabama man dead, authorities said.
Cpl. Steve Smith of the Alabama Public Safety Department said the crash occurred about 4 p.m. Saturday on Interstate 65 in Chilton County, about 25 miles north of Montgomery, the Fort Wayne (Ind.) Daily News reported.
The victims were Alexx Bauer, Matthew Roe, Evan Weaver and Riley Zimmer, all 18 of Angola, Ind.; and Niall McNellis, 21, of Troy, Ala.
The newspaper said the Indiana youths were returning home from spring break.
"It's a lightning strike out of the blue. It's going to be devastating to a lot of people," Angola High School Principal Steve Grill told the newspaper Sunday.
Authorities said McNellis' southbound car crossed the median and struck the youths' northbound car, which was being driven by Zimmer. Another northbound car then struck the youths' car. That driver, Leah Beksvoort of Tennessee, was taken to a local hospital for treatment of her injuries.
A Montgomery, Ala., television station reported on its Web site that state troopers said severe weather could have played a role in the accident.
