Detroit woman surrenders in police siege

DETROIT, March 25 (UPI) -- A Detroit woman who barricaded herself in her home with her daughter gave up peacefully early Friday, police said.

The 11-hour standoff ended around 4:45 a.m., the Detroit Free Press reported.

Police said they accompanied child protection workers to the home Thursday with an order to take the 13-year-old girl into custody. Two policemen kicked in a door and were about to break down another when the woman shot at them, police said.

The woman, who was not identified, had stopped giving medication to her mentally ill daughter, Minister Malik Shabazz, a community activist, told The Detroit News. She believed it was harming the child.

"She's just trying to protect her daughter," said Shabazz, who stayed at the scene for hours. "All of this is about loving her."

Detroit Police Sgt. Eren Stephens would not confirm that aspect of the events.

The girl's father and other relatives came and formed a prayer circle in the cold night to pray for a peaceful outcome, Shabazz said.

The woman finally surrendered at the urging of Wayne County Circuit Judge Deborah Thomas.

The daughter was taken to Children's Hospital for evaluation, Stephens said, but her condition was not available.
