Doctor gets 7 years for plot to kill wife

DAYTON, Ohio, March 23 (UPI) -- An Ohio doctor was sent to prison for seven years Wednesday for trying to arrange the killing of his ex-wife.

Shafik Ahmad, 49, of Washington Township, was sentenced in Dayton by Judge John Kessler, the Dayton Daily News reported.

Ahmad was convicted of conspiracy to commit murder Jan. 27 despite claims of entrapment.

"You never respected me as your wife or the mother of your child," Kristin Hornsby told him at the sentencing hearing. Their son "will never be able to relive his childhood," she said.

Ahmad was silent.

Kessler told him he probably would lose his medical license and be deported back to Pakistan after his prison term, but those matters would be decided by others.

Hornsby and Ahmad were married in 1996, had a son in 1999 and divorced in 2005.

Ahmad was arrested Oct. 21, 2009, after meeting with Josh Ryan, a former patient. Ryan testified that Ahmad came to him for help finding a hit man.

Ahmad told Ryan to have the hit man follow Hornsby after she dropped their son off at school. When arrested, Ahmad had photographs of Hornsby and directions to the school in his pocket, the newspaper said.
