Mother charged for poisoning fetus

INDIANAPOLIS, March 16 (UPI) -- An Indiana woman is facing a murder charge after she ate rat poison while pregnant, leading to the death of her baby.

Bei Bei Shuai, 34, of Indianapolis was arrested Monday on charges of murder and attempted feticide. She was to appear in court Wednesday, The Indianapolis Star reports.

Shuai gave birth to her daughter Angel Dec. 31. The girl was removed from life support and died Jan. 3 from brain bleeding caused by the poison.

Court papers state a friend found Shuai looking ill Dec. 23, and she later admitted consuming rat poison in a suicide attempt because her boyfriend had left her.

When police searched Shuai's apartment, they found an open packet of rat poison and scattered pellets, court documents say.
