Hawaii lowers tsunami damage estimate

HONOLULU, March 15 (UPI) -- The tsunami that hit Hawaii Friday caused tens of millions of dollars in damage but less than originally thought, Gov. Neil Abercrombie's office said.

The damage estimate was lowered after state and county officials had a chance to survey the areas hardest hit, KITV, Honolulu, reported.

They included Kealakekua on the Big Island where a home was dragged into the bay.

Also damaged were Maalaea Harbor and Kahului on Maui.

Big Island crews have already begun repairs on Alii Drive in Kona where waves crashed over the breakers flooding many businesses.

Gov. Abercrombie planned to visit some of the areas damaged by the tsunami Tuesday.
