EL SEGUNDO, Calif., March 13 (UPI) -- A helicopter lifting an air-conditioning unit off a building in California crashed Sunday, injuring the pilot and setting the plant on fire, authorities said.
The Los Angeles Times reported the accident occurred about 9:30 a.m. at a Raytheon manufacturing facility in El Segundo.
El Segundo Fire Battalion Chief Richard Guyer said the pilot lost control and the chopper hit a patio and tunnel area, setting two floors of the defense contractor's building on fire.
It took about 70 firefighters about 40 minutes to extinguish the fire, Guyer said.
Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Mike Fergus said the pilot, whose name had not been released, was seriously injured. Fox News reported he was hospitalized in stable condition.
