Former detective and ex-guard face charges

WESTMINSTER, Calif., March 7 (UPI) -- Two friends -- a former police detective and an ex-prison guard -- face charges in California that they kidnapped and raped a young mother, officials said.

Anthony Nicholas Orban, formerly with the Westminster Police Department, and Jeff Thomas Jelinek, a former correctional officer at the Chino Institute for Men, face life in prison if convicted in the alleged attack prosecutors say occurred after the two spent a day drinking heavily and looking for women, The Orange Country Register reported Monday.

Orban and Jelinek have pleaded not guilty and have been held in lieu of $2 million bail since their arrests after the April 3, 2010, attack, the newspaper said.

Orban is accused of forcing himself into the 25-year-old woman's sport utility vehicle at gunpoint as she left her job as a waitress at a mall restaurant as Jelinek stood by.

Orban then allegedly forced her to drive to a parking lot in a business park where he raped, beat and choked her while threatening to kill her with his service weapon, an Ontario Police Department report said.

Jelinek, who stayed behind at the mall, is being charged with kidnapping and rape under the theory of aiding and abetting Orban.

The attack ended when Orban, after letting the woman get dressed, got distracted by cell phone calls, the victim told police in an interview.

She said bolted from the SUV and ran to a liquor store where a clerk called police.
