FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., March 5 (UPI) -- A helicopter crashed in the Florida Everglades Saturday morning, critically injuring the pilot, authorities said.
The chopper took off from Orlando, made a refueling stop in Pahokee and was headed for Tamiami when it went down in western Broward County around 7:30 a.m., Sheriff Fire Rescue spokesman Mike Jachles told the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.
The unidentified pilot, who is in his 50s, sent out a distress call on his cellphone, and air rescue, helped by airboats, eventually found the crash scene around 11 a.m. and dropped a medic to assist him.
The pilot was airlifted to Broward General Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale, where he is in critical condition with multiple injuries, Jachles said.
