Group offers college aid to white males

SAN MARCOS, Texas, Feb. 25 (UPI) -- A Texas group says it is offering college scholarships for "excluded" white males.

Colby Bohannan, a Texas State University student and Iraq war veteran, told the Austin American-Statesman he had found many scholarships available for women and minorities but none for people like him.

"I felt excluded," he said. "If everyone else can find scholarships, why are we left out?"

Bohannan and others established the Former Majority Association for Equality, which is offering five $500 scholarships exclusively to white male students. Applicants must be at least 25 percent Caucasian, have a GPA of 3.0 or better and show financial need.

The non-profit was incorporated in Texas last March and has raised $485 so far, but has received no applications, Bohannan said.

Joanne Smith, Texas State's vice president for student affairs, said, "We can't take issue with a scholarship offered to a certain group."

Bohannan pleaded no contest to theft of property of less than $500 in 2001 and issuing a bad check in 2003. William Lake, the group's treasurer, admitted to issuing a bad check in 2008, authorities said.
