PORTLAND, Ore., Feb. 21 (UPI) -- A 26-year-old snowboarder stranded overnight on Oregon's Mount Hood by a storm whiteout has been rescued by a National Guard helicopter, authorities said.
The rescue effort began Sunday afternoon when authorities were alerted that the man had called a friend using a cellphone to report he was lost on the mountain, The (Portland) Oregonian reported.
He had planned to climb Mount Hood while carrying his snowboard and became disoriented in the blowing snow, the newspaper reported.
Search-and-rescue volunteers and deputies from the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office, assisted by the Oregon Army National Guard helicopter, resumed the search early Monday, concentrating on a tree-covered ridge on the west side of the mountain.
The man managed to call crews Monday morning on his cellphone and when located and rescued by the helicopter was said to be uninjured.
Authorities did not release the man's name.
