NEW YORK, Feb. 15 (UPI) -- A Wisconsin woman who took up a New York man's free-rent offer on Craigslist wound up beaten and raped as his sex slave for eight days, police allege.
The 27-year-old woman e-mailed John Hopkins, 45, about his Internet ad, in which he said he had an apartment in Brooklyn available, the New York Post reported Tuesday.
He allegedly told her she could live there at no cost in return for cooking and cleaning. He bought her plane ticket and picked her up at the airport Feb. 4, the Post reported.
But as soon as the two arrived at his apartment, Hopkins allegedly told the woman she would be his slave. He is accused of gagging and blindfolding her, handcuffing her to a radiator, and then raping and beating her over the course of eight days, the Post reported.
Hopkins allegedly let the woman leave the apartment for a job she had secured at a Manhattan restaurant, but she did not call police at that time, the Post said.
On Saturday, the woman contacted her mother, who called the New York Police Department.
When police arrived at the apartment, they discovered the woman shaking on Hopkins' bed.
She was taken to the hospital, the Post said.
Hopkins faces charges including rape, assault and unlawful imprisonment.
