NEW YORK, Feb. 11 (UPI) -- New York City has made more marijuana arrests under Mayor Michael Bloomberg than any mayor in the city's history, a sociology professor said.

NYC police arrested 50,383 people for pot in 2010, about 15 percent of all arrests for the year, the New York Daily News reported Friday.

About 70 percent of those arrested were less than 30 years of age and nearly 86 percent were black or Latino, a report by the New York Division of Criminal Justice Services said.

"New York has made more marijuana arrests under Bloomberg than any mayor in New York City history," Queens College sociology professor Harry Levine said.

The study said there were 29,752 marijuana arrests in 2005, 41 percent fewer than in 2010.
