No other flawed pipes found after blast

SAN JOSE, Calif., Feb. 9 (UPI) -- Pacific Gas & Electric says it has found no other gas pipelines built like the one that exploded in San Bruno, Calif., last year.

Kirk Johnson, PG&E's vice president for gas transmission and distribution, told the San Jose Mercury News an internal review found no locations elsewhere in Northern California where large gas pipes contain multiple "pups," or sections, welded together.

"It is not something that we see. And it is certainly not common," he said.

Last month the National Transportation Safety Board reported finding 150 flaws in welds along the 44-foot section of underground pipe that exploded Sept. 9. Eight people were killed and 60 injured, and 161 homes were destroyed or damaged.

Chris Johns, president of PG&E's gas and electric operating unit, said no employee has been fired or disciplined yet for the disaster because federal investigators have not released the final cause.

"Whether or not you can say there was one person accountable or two people who are accountable, this company is accountable, and we will do the things to make sure everybody sees we are taking that seriously," he said.
