Carbon monoxide leak sickens 54 at game

GUNNISON, Colo., Feb. 7 (UPI) -- A mysterious carbon monoxide leak poisoned 54 people attending a hockey tournament in Colorado, a hospital said.

Eight victims of Sunday's incident in Gunnison were hospitalized in serious condition, and two were transported to Denver for hyperbaric oxygen chamber treatment, Randy Phelps, chief executive of Gunnison Valley Health Hospital, told KMGH-TV, Denver. The pressurized chamber treatment restores oxygen levels in the body and reduces carbon monoxide as quickly as possible.

The injuries were not life-threatening, Phelps said, and the other people affected -- adults, teenagers and children -- were treated and released.

The cause of the carbon monoxide leak was not immediately determined.
