2 arrested in fatal college party shooting

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio, Feb. 6 (UPI) -- Two men were arrested in Ohio Sunday after a shooting at a house party near Youngstown State University left one person dead and 11 wounded, police said.

Youngstown police Chief Jimmy Hughes said the names of the suspects, who are in their early 20s, were not being released, The (Youngstown) Vindicator reported. Both were charged with murder and 11 counts of felonious assault, he said.

Jamail Jackson, 25, of Youngstown, was fatally wounded at the party at his home near the campus, the newspaper said. YSU officials said he was a student there.

Another shooting victim, Shavai Owens, 17, of Youngstown, was listed in critical condition Sunday, The Vindicator said. The other victims were expected to recover.

Police Capt. Rod Foley said a fight broke out at the party and escalated into gunfire about 3 a.m.

Of the 12 people shot, six were YSU students, university spokesman Ron Cole said. He said they included fraternity members living off-campus.

The university said campus police Chief John Gocala "reports that there is no threat to campus."

YSU President Cynthia Anderson visited wounded students and their families at St. Elizabeth Medical Center.

The Vindicator said Jackson, a fraternity member, had escorted one of the two suspects out of the house where about 50 people were partying a short time before the shooting began.

Hughes said one suspect surrendered at the city Police Department Sunday and the second was taken into custody at his home.

"I want to express my deepest sympathies to the family of the student who died in this tragic act of violence, and to ask everyone to keep him and the other students in their thoughts and prayers," Anderson said in a statement to the campus community. "It is a sad day for the YSU family."
