Defendant gets life in SoCal pot robbery

SANTA ANA, Calif., Feb. 5 (UPI) -- California prosecutors said a firearms sentencing enhancement landed a Los Angeles man life in prison for a stickup at a medical-marijuana dispensary.

Arsenio Collins, 21, of Los Angeles, was convicted in October of two counts of attempted murder in connection with the 2008 incident even though no one was injured in the robbery and ensuing struggle inside the Laguna Niguel dispensary.

The Los Angeles Times said Saturday Collins, who was sentenced Friday, was convicted of intending to kill three employees of the dispensary and intentionally firing the gun, which warranted the stiff enhancement even though no one was hit.

Collins was one of five suspects in the case, the Times said. The dispensary owner had made the other four wait outside and locked the door behind Collins. Three other defendants pleaded guilty and the fourth was never caught.
