Bus hijacking foiled in North Carolina

HENDERSON, N.C., Feb. 4 (UPI) -- All passengers and the driver escaped the hijacking of a Greyhound bus in North Carolina, authorities said.

Vance County Sheriff Peter White told WRAL-TV, Raleigh, the suspect, whom he did not name, was subdued with a stun gun and captured.

The suspect, from Arlington, Va., walked up to the bus driver along Interstate 85 South in Warren County late Thursday and asked to be let off, then got angry and pulled out a gun, passengers said.

He claimed to have a bomb and said, "If I don't get you with the gun, I will get you with the bag," White said.

The driver pulled over, and all but two of the 35 passengers escaped by the rear emergency exit, White said, but the hijacker ordered the driver to keep going.

A passing driver called 911, and police were waiting when the driver pulled off in Henderson and stopped at a gas station.

The driver and remaining two passengers got off the bus safely. A search found no explosives.

Passenger Xavier Little said: "Nobody understood what was the purpose. He kept saying, 'I want to go to the courthouse, the nearest courthouse.'"
