Threat shuts down Michigan college campus

MARQUETTE, Mich., Feb. 2 (UPI) -- The campus of Northern Michigan University was closed down after anonymous threat Wednesday, officials said.

Cindy Paavola, a spokeswoman for the university in Marquette, told the Detroit Free Press police got a call about 7 a.m. of a threat directed at the entire community to occur Wednesday. She said the caller was reporting the threat, not making it, and authorities were searching for those responsible.

At an afternoon briefing, NMU Public Safety Director Mike Bath said the university was working with the FBI to identify "persons of interest."

"We are talking to witnesses and following up on comments made," he said. "Some of the people being interviewed are students and some are not. All are located within the county. We are treating this threat as if it could still be active."

He said the campus was "under control" but evening classes were canceled and the dorms, with 2,300 residents, remained under lockdown.

More than 3,000 students in the Marquette Area Public Schools were dismissed early and Marquette Senior High School, next to the NMU campus, was locked down as well.
