Texas man released after 25 years in prison

DALLAS, Jan. 27 (UPI) -- A man who spent almost 25 years in a Texas prison for a rape that may not have occurred was released on bond Thursday.

Larry Sims, 60, of Dallas, is not completely free, the Dallas Morning News reported. He must wear an ankle monitor and obey a curfew.

"I don't understand," his cousin, Larry Freeman, said. "If you're cleared and after 25 years, I think you'd just get out."

Michelle Moore, Sims' lawyer, said she will file a legal challenge to the conditions of Sims' release.

Sims was convicted in 1986 of raping a woman during a night of doing drugs with a cousin, Gerald Harding, in a motel room. There were two women with them.

During his trial, the prosecutor said there was no evidence available that Sims had sex with the woman. Harding testified that he and the woman had consensual sex.

Years later, investigators discovered the rape kit and found the DNA matched Harding, supporting his story. Sims said the woman tried to blackmail him into giving her drugs with the rape charge.
