Photo of Ga. governor as Nazi riles some

ATLANTA, Jan. 26 (UPI) -- El Nuevo Georgia, a Spanish-language newspaper, has drawn some heat for an altered photo of Gov. Nathan Deal sporting a Nazi uniform and Hitler mustache.

The editor, Rafael Navarro, told CNN he wanted to draw attention to the immigration issue.

"Americans don't read our paper because they can't read Spanish," he said. "They don't read our news, our editorials and the opinion of the community. But if they see a picture, they'll get it."

Traffic on the El Nuevo Georgia Web site has gone up considerably since local news media reported on the Nazi picture, which ran Jan. 6, he said.

Deal and other candidates in last year's election supported immigration legislation modeled on a controversial Arizona law. The article illustrated by the doctored photograph was titled "Repression in the age of Deal."

State Rep. Pedro Marin, a Democrat who was quoted in the article, said he finds the photograph "disrespectful."

"I might disagree with the policies of Governor Deal, but I respect him and the office he represents," he said.

Marin said his own house and car have been targeted by vandals since he has made public statements on immigration taking the opposite side from Deal's position.
