WASHINGTON, Jan. 26 (UPI) -- U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., Wednesday called for an end to automatic annual pay increases for members of Congress.

McCaskill told a news conference her bill mirrors one previously introduced by Sen. Russ Feingold, D-Wis., ending the annual cost-of-living adjustments for representatives and senators and is co-sponsored by Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., and others.

"In this economy, Americans across the country are out of work and those who are working are certainly not receiving annual raises," McCaskill said in a statement on her official Web site. "There's no reason Congress should be getting a pay raise each year. We hear a lot of talk about cutting back, and the automatic pay raises should be the first item on the chopping block."

Congress eliminated pay raises for 2010 and 2011 but did not make the action permanent.
