FAYETTEVILLE, Ark., Jan. 25 (UPI) -- A former Miss Arkansas Teen USA has been arrested on a public intoxication charge at the University of Arkansas, authorities said.
Megan Burgess, who handed over her crown to the new Miss Arkansas Teen USA two weeks ago, was arrested by campus police early Saturday, KSPR-TV, Springfield, Mo., reported.
Police said they received a call from Burgess' dorm from someone reporting that Burgess had left the dorm and was running in the street.
"We received the phone call that there was a possibly intoxicated individual so the person that called us was concerned for that person and they were trying to assist her in some way and she ran and they pointed us in that direction," UAPD Lt. Gary Crain said.
Police said they found Burgess sitting by herself in the woods near a campus parking lot.
She was unsteady on her feet and a danger to herself, police said, so they made the arrest.
"We would like not to have to do that but we also cannot take the chance of leaving people out on their own if they are not able to take care of themselves," Crain said.
In addition to the legal charges, the university's Office of Community Standards and Ethics would review this case, officials said.
