Big UConn football donor wants money back

STORRS, Conn., Jan. 25 (UPI) -- The donor of $3 million to build a University of Connecticut football complex says he wants his money back and his name taken off the facility.

Robert G. Burton of Greenwich, Conn., told Athletic Director Jeff Hathaway he is unfit for the job, The Day of New London reported. Burton, in a letter dated Jan. 19, cited the departure of Randy Edsall, the former football coach, and Hathaway's hiring of Paul Pasqualoni.

The newspaper said it obtained a copy of the letter. Burton was angry about not being consulted about Pasqualoni's hiring.

"The primary reason Randy took another job is because he couldn't work with you," Burton wrote. "You are not qualified to be a Division I AD, and I would have fired you a long time ago. You do not have the skills to manage and cultivate new donors."

Burton, the chairman of Burton Capital Management in Greenwich, said he was taking a number of actions immediately, including transferring scholarship funds from the UConn football program to the business school, canceling his luxury box at the stadium and transferring a training program for his company from UConn to Syracuse.
