Detroit man charged in wave of rapes

DETROIT, Jan. 24 (UPI) -- A Detroit man charged with a series of rapes could get life in prison if convicted, authorities said Monday.

Police Chief Ralph Godbee said Raynard Coleman, 31, will be arraigned on six of eight assaults on the city's east side in the first two weeks of January. Police have warrants for five assaults and one attempt, he said at a news conference reported by The Detroit News.

The charges against Coleman include first-degree criminal sexual conduct, attempted rape and armed robbery, said Jerry Dorsey of the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office. "He's facing multiple life offenses if convicted," Dorsey said.

Police arrested Coleman Wednesday outside his home, near where the rapes occurred. He was picked out of a lineup by all of the victims, attorney James Galen Jr. said.

Galen said investigators also told him they have DNA evidence tying Coleman to the crimes.

Montia Tyus, who lives with Coleman, said he resembled a police sketch of the rapist and often would disappear at night without explanation, but she was still shocked by the charges.

"I can't believe he did it -- if he did it," she said after his arrest.
