Teen says he used birthday gun to kill dad

SPARTANBURG, S.C., Jan. 19 (UPI) -- A South Carolina boy told police he killed his father with the rifle he received for his birthday in September, investigators said Tuesday.

The 14-year-old allegedly killed his great-aunt and critically wounded his grandmother Monday night, CNN reported. Police in Spartanburg said the teen reported the shootings to a 911 dispatcher.

He said "in a calm, controlled, methodical voice that he would be waiting or come outside when police arrived, and he had laid the gun on the dining room table," Tony Fisher, Spartanburg public safety director, said.

Fisher said officers who responded found the bodies of Joe Robert Lankford, 44, and Virginia Gaston, 83, in their beds. Rachel Gaston Lankford, 80, was taken to a hospital.

The teen had come out of the house with his hands up when officers arrived.

The boy's identity has not been released because of his age.

Fisher said the teen talked willingly to police officers but had not been able to say why he shot his relatives. Investigators have found nothing in his school records or other information to suggest a propensity for violence, CNN said.
