YARMOUTH, Maine, Jan. 11 (UPI) -- A member of O.J. Simpson's Los Angeles murder trial defense team says the defense had conclusive evidence of Simpson's innocence but chose not to present it.
F. Lee Bailey, now living in Yarmouth, Maine, has written an outline of the reasons he believes Simpson did not kill Nichole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman. The document posted on baileyandelliott.com is also the outline of an intended book.
Simpson was acquitted in 1995 after an eight-month trial but the jury in a civil wrongful death suit found he was liable for the deaths. He is now serving a long prison term in Nevada for robbing a sports memorabilia dealer at gunpoint.
Bailey said misleading accounts in the news media created a public perception of Simpson's guilt, and the defense had to cut its presentation short to avoid a mistrial as jurors were dismissed. He said the defense had a "huge and impressive array of evidence which went cold in the defense's arsenal because we had to abort the trial due to juror attrition and two frightened prosecutors."
He cites an expert on battered women who said Simpson did not meet the profile of a batterer and a psychiatrist who described him as not likely to be a killer. Bailey said the defense had a witness, a dog walker, who had seen a blonde woman and a man struggling near Brown Simpson's house the night Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman were killed.
