DENVER, Jan. 10 (UPI) -- A man faces charges in Colorado for allegedly making multiple threats to the staff of U.S. Sen. Michael Bennet, authorities said Monday.

The Denver Post reported the latest incident occurred Thursday when the suspect, John Troy Davis, allegedly called Bennet's Denver office with concerns about his Social Security benefits and said he "may go to terrorism."

"To get your attention, I will go down there and set fire to the perimeter," an affidavit quotes Davis as saying.

The FBI arrested Davis Friday, coincidentally, one day before U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, D-Ariz., and 19 other people were gunned down in Tucson. Six people died in that assault and Giffords is hospitalized with a gunshot wound to the head.

The Denver-area man allegedly had called Bennet's office several days earlier and threatened another staffer.

"I'm just going to come down there and shoot you all," the affidavit quotes him as saying in that phone call.

"Davis is well-known to the senator's office as he has called frequently to complain about such benefits," the affidavit states.

He allegedly told the Democratic senator's staff during one conversation that "I'm a schizophrenic and I need help."

Colorado Bureau of Investigation records show Davis was arrested in July on a drug charge that was later dismissed.
