Feds investigate NYC snow removal workers

NEW YORK, Jan. 4 (UPI) -- New York sanitation workers who slowed down to rack up overtime after last week's blizzard could face federal charges, sources told The New York Times.

The Times said people familiar with an investigation by the U.S attorney in Brooklyn said the charges would be wire fraud.

Many streets remained unplowed for days after the storm. New York officials have said in many cases they could not be plowed because of cars and trucks in the street.

Critics outside of government have said Mayor Michael Bloomberg did not declare a snow emergency quickly enough and emergency plans were not put in place soon enough.

City Councilman Daniel Halloran's office said the Queens Republican has turned over evidence of a deliberate slowdown. He told the New York Post last week some sanitation workers reported supervisors, angry because Bloomberg has cut the number of people in the job, told workers to proceed slowly.

Halloran also turned over video showing snowplows traveling on snow-covered streets with their plows up.
