NEW YORK, Jan. 3 (UPI) -- Sanitation workers in New York City Monday resumed their primary role -- collecting garbage -- after spending days clearing the streets of snow, officials said.
The Sanitation Department said it would provide "limited" trash collection Monday, with just half the number of trucks usually in service, the New York Daily News reported.
"It's an eyesore. Right now it just looks bad," said Manhattan resident Vitorio Sartor, 57.
Peter Burnly, 20, echoed Sartor's comments.
"It's dirty, it's filthy and it's disgusting," Burnly said. "We've got to deal with it until someone comes and picks it up."
Officials said Christmas trees will be picked up, but other recycling collection is suspended indefinitely. They also reminded residents it is their responsibility to provide sanitation workers a path through the snow to their refuse.
The record-setting snow had one upside: It capped the stench.
"We're lucky it's cold," said Frank Cooper, 72, of Brooklyn.
