Texas baby recovering from gunshot

Dec. 27, 2010 at 4:59 PM

DALLAS, Dec. 27 (UPI) -- A baby is recovering in a Dallas hospital after being grazed in the knee when a gunman shot up a minivan, police say.

The 11-month-old boy was grazed in the 11:40 p.m. Sunday shooting in the Pleasant Grove area, The Dallas Morning News reported. Police said he's in good condition at Children's Medical Center in Dallas.

No arrests had been made but authorities were on the lookout for "a person of interest." Police said they think the minivan driver, Juan Gomez, 22, was the intended target of the gunman who fired several shots into the driver's side door.

"The person in the suspect vehicle has some kind of ax to grind against the driver of the van," said Deputy Chief Craig Miller, who oversees the assaults unit.

In the minivan with Gomez were 22-year-old Esther Chavez, and her three boys, ages 11 months to 4 years.

Gomez sped away and the gunman did not pursue them, police said. Miles away, when Chavez started getting her children out, she realized the 11-month-old was wounded and they called police.
