Ban condemns Nigerian violence

UNITED NATIONS, Dec. 26 (UPI) -- United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon Sunday condemned recent violence in Nigeria that left at least 30 people dead and more than 70 others injured.

Ban cited media reports of bombings near the city of Jos Friday that were followed by additional clashes in the city, which has been the site of fighting between Christians and Muslims in the past.

The U.N. release said members of a radical Muslim sect reportedly attacked two churches in the northern state of Borno Friday, killing several people.

Ban "condemns these deplorable acts of violence, especially at a time when millions of Nigerians are celebrating religious holidays, and supports efforts by the Nigerian authorities to bring those responsible to justice," his representative said in a statement.

The secretary-general extended his condolences to the victims' families, as well as to the people and government of Nigeria.
