Eastern U.S. hit with Christmas blizzard

NEW YORK, Dec. 25 (UPI) -- Tens of thousands of air travelers in the eastern United States had plans thwarted Saturday by winter storm systems that canceled hundreds of flights.

From heavy rains in Louisiana to heavy snow warnings north into the Carolinas and blizzard warnings from New York to Massachusetts, weather decimated the number of flights, CNN reported.

Delta Air Lines alone canceled some 500 Christmas Day flights with origins or destinations in the east, CNN said. Delta, along with Continental, United, American and AirTran airlines, announced they were waiving rebooking fees on account of the weather.

The National Weather Service issued a heavy snow warning for parts of North and South Carolina and Georgia, while blizzard warnings were issued from Massachusetts south through New York and New Jersey, with the possibility of up to 16 inches of snow, the report said.

AccuWeather.com said storms are being generated by a northward-moving system and a southern-moving cold front.

The National Weather Service also warned of a coastal flood threat for eastern Massachusetts during high tides.
