PHOENIX, Dec. 22 (UPI) -- Phoenix Suns point guard Steve Nash has filed for divorce, describing his five-year marriage as "irretrievably broken," court papers say.
In his Dec. 15 divorce filing, Nash, a multimillionaire, also requested the court deny his wife Alejandra spousal maintenance, upholding a prenuptial agreement, The Arizona Republic reported.
Nash announced the end of his marriage on Nov. 13, the day after his son was born. He and his wife also have twin daughters.
Alejandra Nash released a statement Tuesday: "I still do not quite understand what interests possessed Steve to do such a thing at this moment, as he told me of his desire to divorce the day before the birth of our son. I thought I knew Steve better. But no matter how trying and disappointing the situation, Steve is the father of our family."
Steven Wolfson, Nash's lawyer, said Alessandra and the three children "will be provided for."
Nash, 36, who was born in South Africa and grew up in Canada, joined the Suns in 1994 after a stellar career with Santa Clara University in California. He played with the Dallas Mavericks from 1998 to 2004 and then returned to Phoenix.
