Skulls found in Boston apartment basement

BOSTON, Dec. 16 (UPI) -- Boston police say they and the state medical examiner's office are examining two skulls found in a cardboard box in an apartment building.

Workers cleaning out the basement of a three-story apartment building in the city's Mission Hill neighborhood discovered the box with the skulls and immediately notified police, The Boston Globe reported Thursday.

No other body parts were found, a police spokeswoman said, but a trash container located behind the building was impounded.

"I wouldn't even speculate" about whether they're real, spokeswoman Elaine Driscoll said. "Homicide detectives, as a matter of routine procedure, will bring them to the Medical Examiner's Office."

Police searched the three-story building and the alley behind it for more than two hours, the Boston Herald reported.

Duane Freeman, a barber who works in the neighborhood, said one skull was larger than the other and both had teeth.

"We came to the conclusion it might belong to one of the med students in the area, or it might be a hoax," he said. "But they looked real to me."
