At least 1 dead, 5 shot in barbershop duel

SACRAMENTO, Dec. 14 (UPI) -- A gun battle Tuesday spilled out of a Sacramento barbershop into a parking lot, where a woman apparently caught in cross fire was killed, police said.

At least five people were being treated for wounds sustained after two men entered the Fly Cuts and Styles shop just after 1 p.m. and started shooting at two men who were getting haircuts, and the two targeted men started shooting back. The battle carried over into the parking lot, where a 30-year-old woman who was putting her child into a vehicle was shot and killed, The Sacramento Bee reported.

Sacramento Sheriff's Department Sgt. Tim Curran said the woman evidently was an innocent bystander. The toddler was with deputies and firefighters Tuesday afternoon while authorities searched for family members, the newspaper said.

One of the five wounded was in surgery for wounds described as life-threatening.

Investigators said the five wounded included the two men who opened fire initially, the two who fired back, and the barber, a 27-year-old man who was shot in the ankle.

Curran said the cause of the gun battle "definitely was not a robbery."

He said at least two dozen other people were in a back room at the barbershop, some of them playing cards or dominoes.
