Lee Harvey Oswald connection 'freaky'

NEW ORLEANS, Dec. 13 (UPI) -- A Louisiana man says it's "freaky" to have learned Marguerite Oswald, the mother of presidential assassin Lee Harvey Oswald, nearly became his godmother.

Byron Meyer and his mother were going through papers damaged by Hurricane Katrina when they found a 1969 note from Oswald's mother saying she "would be so honored to act as 'godmother' for the new baby," The (New Orleans) Times-Picayune reported Monday.

"It's weird. It's bizarre. It's freaky," Meyer said of the note to his mother, Lora Lee Meyer. "She was going to be my godmother -- the mother of the assassin of one of the best presidents in the history of America. It was so close."

Oswald never became Meyer's godmother because she feared authorities wouldn't let her leave Texas even though the assassination of John F. Kennedy happened more than five years earlier.

Lora Lee Meyer said she never met Oswald's mother, who was born in New Orleans. She said her attorney husband planned to help Oswald in litigation involving her son but was unable to find a lawyer in Texas to help.

"I was hoping he could help her," Lora Lee Meyer said. "But he couldn't because the lawyers (in Texas) wouldn't do a thing to help him."

Marguerite Oswald died in 1981 and John Meyer died in 1998 and because he never told his wife about his work, Lora Lee Meyer said she has no idea how her husband came to know Oswald.
