Seal on Zahra Baker case warrants sought

CHARLOTTE, N.C., Nov. 30 (UPI) -- Prosecutors in North Carolina have asked a judge to keep secret a dozen search warrants issued in the investigation into the disappearance of Zahra Baker.

The warrants, typically public records that spell out what evidence investigators are looking for during a search and an inventory of items seized, were placed under seal by judges early in October.

In a motion filed Monday, prosecutors asked the court to extend its seal of the warrants and other documents related to the investigation of Zahra's disappearance and possible death.

"The investigation is ongoing," Catawba County District Attorney Jay Gaither told The Charlotte (N.C.) Observer. "It's important for the integrity of the investigation for the warrants to remain under seal."

No charges have been filed in the disappearance or death of Zahra Baker.

Police have credible evidence that Zahra is dead, they say, and that they have unearthed remains of a child they believe is Zahra.

Zahra's father Adam Baker and stepmother Elisa Baker have denied any wrongdoing in the case.

Elisa Baker remains jailed for obstruction of justice after admitting to writing a phony ransom note to mislead investigators when Zahra was first declared missing, the Observer said.
