Sarkozy brother in NYC divorce battle

NEW YORK, Nov. 30 (UPI) -- The brother of French President Nicolas Sarkozy and his estranged U.S. wife are involved in a legal battle about which country's law applies to their split.

Olivier and Charlotte Sarkozy signed a prenuptial agreement when they were married in 1997. Olivier Sarkozy's lawyer says it was her rich family that wanted the agreement at the time, but she has changed her mind since his wealth has grown considerably in 13 years, the New York Post reports.

Charlotte Sarkozy's lawyer argued before a judge Monday in Manhattan that New York state law should apply because the couple's actual marriage took place in the United States and Olivier Sarkozy was living in New York. That would mean an even split of assets like the $11 million townhouse.

Olivier Sarkozy, an executive with the Carlyle Group, says he and his wife should get to keep those parts of their assets they hold legal title to.
