Saints fan gets 5 years for killing calf

NEW ORLEANS, Nov. 30 (UPI) -- A New Orleans Saints fan has been sentenced to five years for fatally beating a stolen calf after his team lost to the Dallas Cowboys.

Other defendants in the case received probationary sentences. But a judge said Monday that David LeBlanc Jr. deserved prison time for using a shovel to kill a "defenseless animal," The (New Orleans) Times-Picayune reported.

LeBlanc, 22, of Tammany Parish accompanied Dwayne J. Jenkins, 36, and Carnie B. Smith, 29, to Folsom's Red Bluff Farms after a football party in December 2009. The three stole a calf from the petting zoo, took it to the parking lot of the apartment complex where they had been partying and LeBlanc then hit it with the shovel.

A fourth man who admitted dumping the carcass got probation as did Jenkins and Smith.

At his hearing, LeBlanc argued he was the only one who was honest with investigators, asking Judge Martin Coady for leniency. He also said he is about to become a father.
