BOSTON, Nov. 28 (UPI) -- Boston Mayor Thomas Menino is back home after being hospitalized for a bacterial infection in his elbow, his spokeswoman said.
Menino, 67, was admitted to Brigham and Women's Hospital Tuesday with cellulitis, a skin infection, and septic bursitis in the left elbow, The Boston Globe reported. On Wednesday, he had a procedure to drain the bacteria.
The mayor will be treated with antibiotics at home and may be back to work in days, said spokeswoman Dot Joyce. The surgeon expects a full recovery.
"We'll see how this weekend goes with the treatment of antibiotics," Joyce said. "He's making a great recovery."
The mayor's infection may have begun during a trip to Florence, Italy. Menino scraped his elbow in a hotel shower while attending a conference. His staff has said the cut may have become infected.
Since becoming mayor in 1993, Menino has been hospitalized at least nine times.
