Acquittal motion denied in home invasion

HARTFORD, Conn., Nov. 24 (UPI) -- A Connecticut judge Wednesday denied a motion from Stephen Hayes's lawyer for an acquittal in three home invasion murders.

Hayes was convicted and sentenced to death for the killings at the Petit home in Cheshire in 2007.

Superior Court Judge Jon Blue ruled the evidence was sufficient for the jury to convict, The Hartford (Conn.) Courant reported.

Blue said he would hear the motion for a new trial, but would rule on it later.

Defense lawyer Thomas Ullmann said he will enter as exhibits jurors' statements to the media after the verdict, newspaper articles with their quotes and Twitter messages on the case, the verdict, and the aftermath.

One juror Ullmann cited was Paula Calzetta, who said the case was Hayes's "only opportunity for this man to ever make peace with his Supreme Being, if he even has one."
