Adam Baker, Zahra's father, and Elisa Baker, the girl's stepmother, were represented instead by attorneys as District Court Judge Gregory Hayes continued their cases on bad check and other charges, the Charlotte (N.C.) Observer reported.
Elisa Baker remains in jail, accused of obstructing justice in the investigation into Zahra's disappearance.
Adam Baker is free on bail, but he faces charges of writing worthless checks, failure to return rented property, and assault with a deadly weapon.
Hickory, N.C., police have said the 10-year-old girl is dead, after finding a bone that was linked by DNA to Zahra.
Zahra's prosthetic leg and the bone fragment were found in separate locations as police in several counties conducted numerous searches.
Other remains, which police said appeared to be those of a child, were found at yet another site in Caldwell County.
No charges have been filed in her death.
