ADL condemns harassment of Muslims

NEW YORK, Nov. 17 (UPI) -- The U.S.-based Anti-Defamation League has condemned the harassment of Muslims who had gathered to pray at a central square in Athens, Greece.

The ADL said the Muslims were celebrating Eid al-Adha Tuesday when members of a far right group and dozens of local residents yelled anti-Muslim epithets and threw eggs and leaflets with images of pigs at them.

ADL National Director Abraham H. Foxman said the Greek government and all sectors of Greek society must use the tools at their disposal to combat violence extremism.

"Whenever religious bigotry rears its ugly head against Muslims or any religious group we must speak out," said Foxman.

The right-wing group involved in the protest, Chrysi Avgi, won a seat on the Athens municipal council 10 days ago, the ADL said.
