CHARLESTON, W.Va., Nov. 15 (UPI) -- West Virginia got a new governor Monday when Senate President Earl Ray Tomblin was sworn in to succeed Joe Manchin, the state's new senator.

Tomblin was sworn in in a private ceremony, but will have a public swearing-in ceremony by state Supreme Court Chief Justice Robin Davis Tuesday in front of the Senate chambers, The Charleston Gazette reported.

Manchin resigned as governor to complete the term of the late Sen. Robert Byrd. Manchin defeated Republican businessman John Raese to finish Byrd's term.
