Man threatens to blow up bridge, kill self

SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 11 (UPI) -- A California man was taken into custody Thursday after a standoff with police as he threatened to blow up a bridge and commit suicide, officials alleged.

The unidentified man, of Antioch, pulled onto San Francisco's Bay Bridge with his 16-year-old daughter in his SUV after calling emergency dispatchers and a local radio station and saying he had a pipe bomb, the Walnut Creek Contra Costa (Calif.) Times reported.

The man climbed over a side barrier and threatened to jump until police negotiators, talking to him on a cell phone, got him to surrender, the Times reported.

"He was very unstable. We were dealing with someone who's very angry ... because of issues going on in his personal life. But he didn't jump off the bridge and we're very fortunate for that," said California Highway Patrol Sgt. Trent Cross.

The man's daughter escaped and was in police custody, the CHP said.

Although a SWAT team and the San Francisco Bomb Squad were called to the scene because of the talk about explosives, none had been found by press time in the car, which has been removed from the bridge, the newspaper said.
