NEW YORK, Nov. 11 (UPI) -- The son of Gary Condit, the California congressman initially suspected of Chandra Levy's killing, said the ordeal has deeply hurt his family.
Nine years after Levy's killing, Chad Condit said he doesn't know if his father will be able to get past the damage the incident caused to his career and his family, the son said in an interview with George Stephanopoulos on ABC's "Good Morning America" Thursday.
Ingmar Guandique is being tried for Levy's murder, but Gary Condit at one time was the prime suspect in the case, creating a media field day.
"Congressmen are disposable in our society. So one leak here, one story there, you had a runaway train. And when it's your dad, someone you love, it's a painful thing to watch," Chad Condit said.
The son said Gary Condit is writing a book about the incident.
Chad Condit said his father had fully cooperated with the police.
"He told the police everything he knew about Chandra Levy from the very start. I mean he called the police originally. Dr. Levy called my dad because he wasn't getting the kind of response (he wanted) from the police department. So (Gary Condit) got everything moving and it boomeranged on him because it made a good story and it sold a lot of papers," Chad Condit said.
Gary Condit was not re-elected and the killing also hurt his son's and daughter's careers, the report said. Chad and Katie Condit worked for California Gov. Gray Davis but resigned in protest when Davis publicly spoke out against their father.
"There are things more important than politics. And standing by your friends and your family is one of those things," Condit said.
