HARRISBURG, Pa., Nov. 5 (UPI) -- A legislator wants Pennsylvania to outlaw "alcohol energy drinks'' with large quantities of both liquor and caffeine.
Now Rep. Vanessa Lowery Brown of Philadelphia says she will introduce a bill in the new legislative session to ban the drinks, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported.
Brown said the drinks have "sickened people throughout the country, particularly college students.''
"We are seeing more and more circumstantial evidence that these products are dangerous. Combining alcohol and caffeine leads to people who don't realize how drunk they are and the outcome could be tragic. It's time to take a proactive approach here in Pennsylvania,'' she added.
Jerry Waters, regulatory affairs director of the state Liquor Control Board, recently wrote to beverage retailers, asking them to voluntarily halt the sale of drinks like Four Loko until the U.S. Food and Drug Administration determines if they are safe.
