Conn. governor's race may avoid recount

HARTFORD, Conn., Nov. 4 (UPI) -- Votes cast in the New Haven area may be enough to help Democrat Dannel Malloy avoid a recount in Connecticut's gubernatorial race, returns indicated.

Results from the New Haven Registrar of Voters Thursday gave Malloy 22,298 votes to 3,685 for Republican Tom Foley, possibly enough to give Malloy a victory without a recount, The Hartford Courant reported.

Connecticut Secretary of State Susan Bysiewicz declared Malloy the winner of the state's tightest governor's race in 50 years Wednesday, but Foley also claimed victory, refusing to concede an election his supporters say is too close to call.

Bysiewicz said in a radio interview Thursday the vote totals from Bridgeport were incomplete, leading to the confusion, the Courant said.

Malloy unofficially was leading by more than 3,100 votes, more than the 2,000-vote margin that would trigger a statewide recount.

Malloy told reporters at the state Capitol he believes he won by more than 11,000 votes and will be Connecticut's next governor. "I'm standing by those numbers," he said. "I'm confident that will stand up."
