Afghan firefight kills 30 Taliban

KABUL, Afghanistan, Oct. 30 (UPI) -- Surrounded U.S. NATO troops in Afghanistan repelled a Taliban attack Saturday and killed at least 30 militants, officials said.

In a statement, NATO's International Security and Assistance Force said the remote base in eastern Paktika province that borders Pakistan was surrounded by Muslim militants who used rocket-propelled grenades and automatic weapons in their attack, the BBC reported.

The U.S. forces called for air support and the fighting ended soon after.

Five U.S. soldiers were injured in the fight, but there were no coalition fatalities, NATO said.

Meanwhile, Iran's Press TV reported a NATO reconnaissance aircraft crashed in the eastern Afghan province of Khost.

There was no immediate indication if the craft was manned or a reason for the crash.
